The Central Pennsylvania Region is an ideal family destination! You have many options all around the area. Hersheypark® has all the fun any family desires; you can find adventure at ZOOAMERICA North American Wildlife Park, home to more than 200 animals. In Harrisburg for those curious kids that must touch every thing, they are encouraged to do just that at the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts and the State Museum of Pennsylvania’s Curiosity Corner. Watch professional sports throughout the entire region. And, those little nature lovers can get up-close-and-personal with their favorite creature at the Hershey Gardens Butterfly House and Lake Tobias Wildlife Park . If you like cave adventure, you can travel down under the ground at Indian Echo Caverns.
The most significant historical event to touch the Central PA Region was the Civil War. The National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg offers an unbiased look at both sides of the conflict with exhibits, tours and presentations. A trip to nearby battlefields in Gettysburg provides the opportunity to experience reenactments, walk the path of men in battle, and see monuments left to remember a hero. While in the area you may want to visit Franklin County to see the site where the Confederates burned the county seat of Chambersburg .
From there, history buffs can follow the footsteps of our 15th president, James Buchanan, born in Mercersburg and educated at Carlisle ’s Dickenson College . His Wheatland Estate, found in nearby Lancaster , chronicles his life and presidency with tours and educational programs.
Many well-known Americans made their beds in the Heart of PA™ region. Visit the Molly Pitcher monument in Carlisle to learn about this famous American Revolutionary War heroine, or swing by the Carlisle Barracks where the famous athlete, Jim Thorpe, studied at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School , est. 1879.
The Central PA Region has lots of outdoor adventure for those seeking a nature experience. Try the Appalachian Trail or take in a round of golf, fish for trout in the Yellow Breeches or small-mouth bass in the Susquehanna River, watch bald eagles from Waggoner’s Gap or snow geese and tundra swans at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area, go camping in the many campgrounds around the area, or picnic at one of our many state parks. There is something for everyone in your family and Travel By Design is ready to make it happen for your family, group, or business while in the Central PA Area.
